Diabetes Mellitus

DEFINITION
Diabetes Mellitus is also known as Type 2 Diabetes and is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels that result from defects in insulin secretion, or its action, or both. In the United States, over 25.8 million people have diabetes which makes up for 8.3% of the US population. Additionally, diabetes is found most commonly in African Americans, Asians, and Hispanics.

CAUSES
Insufficient production of normal levels of insulin leads to high blood sugar levels and diabetes. Diabetes mainly affects the cells of muscles and fat tissues resulting in insulin resistance.

SYMPTOMS
Early symptoms of untreated diabetes cause elevated blood sugar levels. This can also lead to high amounts of glucose in the urine causing dehydration. Further symptoms include weight loss despite an increase in appetite, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. Some patients with diabetes are also known to develop infections of the bladder, skin, and vaginal areas.
